Backed by more than two decades in the financial consulting sector, Bruce McDougall has secured his success by putting his clients' needs first.
In 1994, McDougall - who has set himself apart from the competition by customizing products for his clients rather than pigeon-holing them into the pre-packaged products provided by large parent companies - took the leap to running his own consultancy.
At the time he'd been with a major investment dealership, which was purchased by another a major investment dealership. It didn't take long for Bruce to identify a threat. "I felt that our independence was being infringed upon."
For the benefit of his clients, McDougall took matters into his own hands by securing his independence with the creation of The McDougall Group (TMG), which operates under Manulife Investment Services Inc. as its sponsoring mutual fund dealer. "We created TMG to guarantee our independence. We don't carry-any proprietary products. Rather we choose our products based on the needs of our clients" McDougall explains.
So what's the McDougall hallmark? He doesn't promote the "spend big to win big" mentality. The benefit of our style is that our clients' portfolios aren't as volatile during peak and low periods which makes the investments more stable and predictable. What further differentiates TMG from other investment firms is the conservative philosophy McDougall has devised in order to protect his clients. During peak seasons his clients' portfolios may seem to under perform in comparison to those of his competitors. However, during low periods, clients are less likely to feel a drastic hit to their portfolio.
In an effort to ensure his customers' satisfaction, McDougall has one key principle: continual reinvestment in the business. Our client advisory council consists of six clients who are rotated every year and meet quarterly to provide direct feedback on our products and services. Each year we also conduct a formal survey of our clients to ask for their opinions on our services and to gather additional information.
